When a half lamb is the right call

A half lamb spit braai suits two situations: a function at the lower end of the guest range where a whole carcass would leave you with trays of leftovers, and a function where lamb is sharing the table with a second protein rather than carrying it alone. The cook itself is shorter than a whole lamb because there is less mass to bring up to temperature, which can matter when your eating time is tight against your arrival time.

What it does not change

The 40-guest minimum still applies — a half lamb is a menu decision, not a way under the headcount floor. Transport, setup, the operator and the carving are the same job whether the spit carries a half or a whole animal, and those are most of what you are paying for. Choosing between the two on cost grounds is set out honestly in the whole lamb cost guide and half lamb planning.

Pairing a half lamb with a second protein

The common pattern is half lamb plus the jumbo chicken from the budget option, which gives guests a choice and covers people who do not eat lamb. Combining proteins changes the carving order and the serving flow more than it changes the cook, so it is worth flagging on the quote request rather than on the day. See second protein options.

Booking a half lamb

Note half lamb on your quote request with your date, suburb and guest count. Packages remain quote on request — there is no published rand-per-person rate card — and the standard terms apply: 50% non-refundable deposit, and a R300 travel levy beyond a 40 km return trip from the N1 City area.

Package options at a glance

Four options, all quote on request from a minimum of 40 guests: Option 1 — whole lamb on the spit with roast baby potatoes and onions; Option 2 — the same plus garlic bread and two salads; budget option — jumbo chicken leg quarters with garlic bread and two salads; Option 3 — whole lamb with roast potatoes and onions, garlic bread and three premium salads. Full breakdown, the deposit and the travel levy are on spit braai prices.

How it works

Share your date and suburb, confirm headcount (min 40) and package option, then lock a quote. On the day we set up the gas spit (~2 hour cook), manage the cook and carve when guests are ready. See spit braai prices.
