Spit Braai for Weddings, Corporate Functions and Parties
A spit braai works the same way at every function — whole lamb or jumbo chicken turning over coals, carved on site from 25 guests — but the timing changes with the occasion. What follows is what actually differs between a wedding, a corporate year-end, a birthday at home and a club function.
Minimum 25 guests · from R116 per guest (lamb R150) · lamb 4–6 hours on coals · 50% non-refundable deposit · free travel within 30 km of N1 City
Wedding spit braai
The carve gets timed against your photographs and speeches, not against the cook. A whole lamb on coals can be held at temperature once it is cooked, so the useful question at a wedding is when you want guests eating — we work backwards from that. The spit itself tends to earn its place during drinks, because it gives guests something to stand around between the ceremony and the meal. Most wedding headcounts firm up late; tell us the number you have and we will quote against it rather than waiting for the final list. Running order is set out in the wedding spit braai timeline.
Corporate spit braai and client days
Corporate functions are the ones with a hard finish time, so the cook is planned against the end of the slot rather than the start. On coals the crew starts 4–7 hours before eating time, so check early that the office park or venue allows an open fire. Dietary lists and headcounts usually arrive from an organiser rather than the host, so send them with the quote request and they get priced in rather than handled on the day. The checklist we work from is on the corporate spit braai checklist.
Year-end functions
December is a diary problem before it is a catering problem. Saturday slots in the first three weeks of December go first, and once they are gone no amount of budget brings them back. If your year-end date is fixed, book the date and settle the menu later — that is the right order in peak season. See year-end function tips and summer peak booking.
Christmas spit braai
Christmas functions compete for the same slots as year-ends, in the same fortnight, and they add heat. A Cape Town December lunch needs shade over the serving line more than it needs anything else on the menu — salads and carved meat both suffer standing in direct sun. Where the spit goes relative to shade and to your guests is worth deciding before the day. More in the Christmas spit braai guide.
Birthday spit braai
Birthdays bring the widest spread of ages, which changes the food more than the logistics: the jumbo chicken option is usually the one that covers children and fussier eaters, and it is often added alongside lamb rather than instead of it. Birthdays also tend to happen at home, which makes access the real constraint — gate width, steps and how far the unit has to be carried. See kids and spit braai and loading zones and access.
Private parties at home
At a house the limits are power, space and neighbours. On coals the third one matters: a whole lamb cooks for 4–6 hours, so tell the neighbours and plan for the spit to be in your garden for most of the day. Space needed around a working spit and the clearances involved are on spit braai space requirements and fire safety.
Club, church and school functions
These are the functions where the budget is fixed before the guest list is, and where the decision goes through a committee rather than one host. Both point the same way: the jumbo chicken option, which brings the per-function cost down without losing the spit or the on-site service. Headcounts are usually the largest we handle, so confirm the number early — it drives whether one spit covers you. See spit braai for churches, sports clubs and large groups.
What does not change with the occasion
The per-guest rates, the 25-guest minimum, the 50% non-refundable deposit and the travel bands from N1 City are the same whatever you are celebrating; the premium wedding package, R272 a guest, is the one menu built for a single occasion. Only the timing and the access change. Full terms are on spit braai prices.
Occasion FAQs
Can you carve after the speeches rather than at a set time?
Yes — eating time is the thing we plan to, so tell us when you want guests served and the cook is worked backwards from it.
Do you cater weekday corporate functions?
Yes. Weekday daytime functions are routine; the fixed finish time is the detail to confirm on the quote request.
How far ahead should I book a December function?
As early as you can. Saturdays in early December fill first, and the date is harder to secure than the menu.
Is there a travel fee?
No, not within 30 km of our N1 City base. 30–50 km adds R500–R800, 50–100 km R1,000–R1,500, and anything further is quoted per job.
